According to a pioneering comparative philosophical idea, self-consciousness presents an issue with which philosophers including German idealists and some scholars belonging to the Chinese tradition, e. g. Cheng Ming-dao and Tang Jun-yi, are concerned. It is maintained that, to explain how self-consciousness is possible, they propose the existence of the universal self-consciousness or the greater Self. This paper aims to analyze the concepts of self-consciousness of Kant, Fichte and Hegel to investigate whether they are really committed to the existence of the greater self.
