The rise of China seems to be a defining factor in contemporary international relations. Although the Chinese government has in many ways become an integrated member of international society in the post-Cold War era, the question remains: is China a revisionist great power or a status quo developing nation? This question has attracted academic interest because of its significance. This essay will attempt to address this important issue by introducing the concept of “making the best use of the situation,” an idea deeply rooted in the Chinese culture, in the hope of stimulating further dialogue and debate.
