As one’s basic needs were fulfilled, they look for spiritual growth; hence the development of Volunteer Tourism, which had raised awareness from researchers to the tourism market (Wearing, 2003; Brown, 2005). The value of Volunteer Tourism existed within the cultural exchange with the locals through cross-cultural interaction (Mustonen, 2006). Leign (2006) proposed that cultural learning experiences were experienced by volunteers. This study adapted participant observation method. In July, 2010, researcher participated in a fourteen-day heritage repair Heritage Bilateral Workcamp, organized by VISION Youth Action in Prambanan, Indonesia. In-depth interview of sixteen participants regarding their motives, expectations, experiences, and their perceptions of the local culture and heritage, were conducted both during and after the trip. It was found that most participants hoped to broaden their insights through cross-cultural learning in order to increase self-awareness and to challenge oneself. Most participants established friendship with team members and learned to value their belongings when compared with the locals. Furthermore, most participants developed new self-awareness and clear perception of future. Although some participants were discouraged by cultural differences and difficulties in communicating, they were able to transform it into motives of learning. Suggestions were also made in attempt to provide guidance for future volunteer tourism.
