Responding to the bourgeoning life story study in Taiwan, the author attempts to document a Taiwanese woman’s troubled life and her negotiations with these troubles. The subject of the study is a teacher who faces various challenges in life with fortitude and determination. Analyzing her 20-year life span will enrich the research of life history in Taiwan. In addition, the study calls to attention the role played by traditional women, especially in marriage, and to the type of relationship on which the wife-mother myth is constructed. The subject of the study simultaneously bears many identifies—she is a daughter, an older sister, a teacher, a wife, and a mother, echoing and sharing the life experience of many other women. Exploring the cultural context and the process of mothering reproduction, the study sheds light on woman representations, the various conflicts embedded in the multiplicity and complexity of woman identity, and the invisible fetters of social conventions superimposed upon women. Only by rediscovering their inner-self can women re-evaluate and re-live their own lives. 1.The findings of this study show the course of the self-empowerment of a woman. Growing up in an extended family, the subject is indoctrinated with many traditional family values, including the emotional bonds among family members, ethics, family glory, patriarchal hierarchy and so forth. 2.Although the closely-knit kinship relationship is a great resource of social capital for women, it also brings great pressure to them. 3.The fact that the subject’s grandma and mother are gatekeepers of patriarchy has implanted the notions of endurance, frugality and tolerance deeply into the subject of this study. However, in her widowhood, the subject comes to listen to the voice of her inner-self and realize that she can live whatever lives she wishes. |
