In my long career in studying Dunhuang manuscripts as well as Chinese texts in East Asia, I have suggested that, in the Tang dynasty, centering on Chang’an, the Silk Road has been linking Central Asia via the Hexi Corridor with Japan via Korea peninsula, and since the spread of a fine writing system in Chinese characters in many different countries with multiple ethnic groups and speaking multiple languages from the Central Plain to the Western Regions and Northeast Asia it has formed a Chinese character cultural sphere, which focused on Chinese characters as instrumental reading and writing tools. The profound impact of this system could be explicitly seen in the rich literature of political institutions, legal system, education, and religions, especially in Buddhist manuscripts. Along the Silk Road, in many cities such as Dunhuang, Turfan, Khotan, and Kucha in the west, and in Korea, Japan in the east, as well as in Tangut and Khitan or Liao areas, numerous manuscripts in Chinese characters have been discovered, which deserve a systematic and comprehensive study. My project will focus on manuscripts from Dunhuang and Japan, also looking at manuscripts from Korea, Khotan, Kucha, and Turfan, as well as those from Tangut and Liao, examining them in the context of Chinese character cultural sphere. I am expected to investigate their common features and the particulars in different regions and ethnic groups. My goals will not only use these materials to supplement the transmitted Buddhist canon, but also draw a new image of the spread of these manuscripts across the boundaries of nation, region, and ethnicity. This study will help us earn a better understanding the eastward spread of Buddhism, and how different regions and nations have chosen and accepted different Buddhist literature. It will also help us understand how the manuscript culture preserved its continuity and also developed its new traditions in the Chinese character cultural sphere at large. By doing so, I hope that this project can broaden current horizon of Dunhuang studies and refresh this field and expect to enter a brand new realm of Dunhuang studies.
