本計畫為二年期計畫，以中國佛教三論宗宗師吉藏的思想為主要研究對象，探究其方法論、二諦論、中道論與佛性觀等，並以之與初期印度中觀學派思想比較參照，以了解吉藏思想的特殊性及相關中印思想差異。計畫採文獻研究法、哲學分析法及比較哲學法等三種方法，並著重抉發吉藏「無得」與「中道」思想的現代哲學價值。 第一年將閱讀與研究《中觀論疏》、《二諦義》、《大乘玄論》等書，以吉藏的二諦論或方法論為主題，撰寫英文學術論文一篇，並比較吉藏與龍樹相關思想的異同關係。第二年則以《十二門論疏》、《百論疏》、《淨名玄論》等論書為主，並以吉藏的中道思想為主題撰寫英文學術論文。 本計畫的預期貢獻有三。(1)探究吉藏思想中的方法論、二諦論、中道論與佛性觀等，顯明其思想的現代意涵，為此國際學界乏人問津的領域做出學術貢獻。(2)探討吉藏與初期中觀思想的異同關係，顯示印度中觀學於六、七世紀中國的思想轉化。(3)充實計畫執行人在三論宗與印度中觀學的學識，有利於擴展專長領域暨提升教學能力。 This project proposes to investigate into the philosophical thought of Jizang (549-623 CE), the main philosophical exponent of the Sanlun school of Chinese Buddhism. It also seeks to compare the thought with early Indian Madhyamaka philosophy of emptiness to shed light on how the Indian Madhyamika teaching was transformed in sixth-seventh century China and how and to what extent Chinese Madhyamaka thought differs from its Indian archetype. The areas that concern us in the project include Jizang’s methodology, the doctrine of twofold truth, the doctrine of middle way, and the thought of Buddha-nature. For our purposes, we will attend to Jizang’s works for an in-depth analysis of his views on these areas. We will also pay heed to the texts of Nagarjuna (c. 150-250 CE), founder of the Indian Madhyamaka, and some post-Nagarjunian Madhyamika treatises for comparisons. We expect to write two English papers to display the result of our research. The paper to be written during the first year of research would focus one Jizang’s methodology or the doctrine of twofold truth. The second paper, to be written in the second year, would attend to his thought of middle way. Apart from philological research, the main methods adopted in the project are philosophical analysis, and comparative research. Efforts would be made to rationally reconstruct Jizang’s thought and to show its contemporary philosophical values. Little has been done in the international circle of Buddhist studies on the philosophic ideas of the Sanlun school. It is hoped that the present project may make contributions in this direction.
