The Dong tribe is one of the ethnic minorities in southwestern China with a population of three-million people today. The Dongs inhabit in the border area of three provinces–Hunan, Guangxi, and Guizhou. The Dong tribe villages are usually located by mountains and rivers and are noted for architectural spectacles such as drum tower, Covered bridge(wine and rain proof bridge), stilt style architecture. “Grand song of the Dong ethnic group” is inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. The Dong theater, fabrics, and medicine are all significant cultural manifestation of the tribe. This article reported the investigation, cooperated by the author and students and professors from Taiwan and China, into ten Dong tribe villages located in Hunan, Guangxi and Guizhou. The particular history, geography, art, and culture of these ten villages are described. As we conducted the investigation, the “Dong tribe village” has been nominated to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List of China. Relative issues of this application are discussed in this article. After we were back in Taiwan, it was conformed that the “Dong tribe village” was inscribed on the Tentative Lists. Efforts to have the village registered in the list of UNESCO World Heritage is worth noting, but what counts more is the recognition of the Dong tribe village as a part of multiple cultures of the world. In hopes of inspiring strategies of sustainable development of the ethnic group, this article provides in-depth observation of the Dong culture.
