Taiwan has been facing a population aging problem and an increasing need to construct standards for evaluating qualified long-term care facilities. In literature, most studies focus on residents’ pathology and medical treatment in long-term care facilities. However, residents’ intention of living in long-term care facilities still appears hindered by a lack of understanding. This paper applies the theory of planned behavior to study the residents’ intentions regarding long-term care facilities, and investigates the relationship between attitudes toward the behavior, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, actual behavior control, and intentions using structural equation modeling. The questionnaire was distributed based on a purposive sampling method and collected in Yunlin and Chiayi from residents living in the long-term care facilities. These areas were considered for the study since they are typical agricultural counties associated with a higher aging population rate (15.04 %、 15.65 % and 10.98%, respectively) in comparison to the average level in Taiwan (10.74 %). A total of 450 questionnaires were delivered and 316 effective samples obtained from the on-site interviews. Empirical results reveal that a resident’s attitude towards the behavior is positively related to their intentions to live in long-term care facilities. But subjective norms and perceived behavioral control do not play any significant role in affecting a resident’s intention. Some policy implications for the long-term care industry were also discussed.
