The present cross-sectional survey study used self-administered questionnaires to investigate the prevalence of and factors associated with nocturnal leg cramps (NLCs) among adolescents. A total of 1018 adolescents studying at a vocational high school in Chiayi County, Taiwan were recruited into the study during the period from November 5 to December 5, 2008. Logistic regression and linear regression were conducted using the Chinese version of SPSS ver. 12.0 for Windows Results showed that 64.0% of the females and 63.6% of the males had experienced NLCs. Body weight (p<0.001), vitamin E (p<0.001), and vitamin B1 (p=0.004) were significantly associated with NLCs. However, physical activity score was not associated with NLCs. The frequency of NLCs in the last month were significantly associated with intake of niacin (p=0.001). Obesity was significantly associated with intensity of NLCs (p<0.001), duration of NLCs (p=0.023), and cramp score (p<0.001). Changes in height between the time of research and the last semester were significantly associated with the frequency of NLCs (p=0.006). Therefore, obesity and growth spurt during puberty were associated with NLCs among vocational high school students.
