According to the mission of the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, important cultural and natural relics on earth are all left behind by our human ancestors, are jointly owned by all humankind, and are important assets that must be suitably preserved to be passed onto posterity. Ancient paths that stand witness to Taiwan's developmental history over centuries; even though they have gradually lost their function due to the flow of time, they have undeniable historical meaning. The definition of "cultural tourism" as established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a type of tourist activity in which the tourists engage with the cultural environment. Traveling on ancient paths with historical background, one can enjoy psychological and physical experience of the view, local forms of living, and traditional values. It can be said that traveling on ancient paths is a type of cultural tourism. Danlan Historic Trail is the earliest east-west thoroughfare in northern Taiwan. It not only allowed for the development of Kamalan, but also facilitated the opening of the northern, central, and southern mountain passes. This brought an initial scope of the island-wide transportation roads at the time, and has a historically significant status as a connective road. Caoling Historic Path is one of the three remaining lines of the Danlan Historic Trail. This study uses visitor employed photography (VEP) to explore the cultural images by tourists who visit the Caoling Historic Path for the first time. From the photographic feedback of the research subjects, it can be seen that those surveyed use a subjective photography on the objects, showing that the images exist, and are an extension of the spirit of the place. However, after the historic path was reestablished as a walkway system, various forms of guidance were not used to construct the cultural spirit of the historic path. The overly reconstructed historic path makes walking easy, but also raises questions in minds of tourists about the differences between the historic path and other ordinary paths.
