The China Times Book Review, in terms of its layout and its working group of editors and reporters, is in the leading position among the printed media of its kind. The China Times Book Review considers itself as an effective medium for book review, and thus positions itself as a cultural publication, encouraging reading and publishing of excellent books. As book reviews influence deeply the sales profit, readers are concerned about the selection process of the China Times Book Review, final results of the selection, and factors that may affect the results. Starting from the theory of gatekeepers, this thesis depicts the China Times Book Review, and explores the operation mechanism of the China Times. This thesis then finds: 1. Books selected tend to fit in the category of humane letters. However, the percentage of books belonging to science is heavily increased. Translated books and books by local authors are half-and-half in the total number of selected books. In terms of the New Classification Scheme for Chinese Libraries, books in the fields of philosophy, religions, natural science, applied science, social science, arts, and world history and geography are mostly translated. Books by local authors make up the most of the main generalities, Chinese history and geography and language and literature are focused on the fields of literature and critical essays. 2. Editors and reporters for the China Times Book Review are responsible for administrative business. "The Review Team," hiring its critics from experts and scholars of all walks, takes care only the selection of books. The dividend of the two responsibilities are designed so the Critic Team is able to cover expertise of all subjects and avoid skillfully the personnel intervention and thus the authority can be protected and maintained. 3. Members and critics of the Review Team are mostly professors from colleges and research organizations, researchers, and writers. This composition gives the Review Team an academic tinge and further demonstrates the expertise and authority, which the China Times Book Review represents. 4. The involvement to the China Times Book Review from the China Times itself and from the top managers of affiliate enterprises is equally small. However, some publishers still ask acquaintances in the China Times to send publication messages to the China Times Book Review. These messages are interrupted before long. 5. The China Times Book Review and its selection directions have the least influence on publishers' editing policies. "The Weekly Billboard" gives positive reviews rather than negative reviews more often than not. Reviews to publishers are, therefore, so much on the promotion and advertising campaigns rather than on publishing guidelines. Besides, reviews would benefit the sales, but publishers find no ways to direct reviews through personal friendships or advertisement budgets. 6. Most reforms of The China Times Book Review, in terms of layouts and editing policies come from the inside brainstorms and the feedback returned from readers is minimal.
