The main theme of this study was to explore the experience and cognition of delivering spiritual care of 15 hospice nurses. This objective was to be achieved by the application of Burns and Grove(1997)five analytic steps. In one hospice ward, the 15 nurses with hospice experience over three months were recruited to participate in this research. An in-depth interview was conducted to explore the participants’ definition, experiences, and felt difficulties of spiritual care. The tape-recorded interview was translated into written format for subsequent analyses. Findings were categorized, interpreted and reinterpreted into the following 8 main issues. It was showed that:1.The definitions of spiritual care.2.Multiple approaches ranging from physical, psychosocial care and religious were used to practice spiritual care.3.Initial encounter serves as anchor for future practice.4.Major challenges of delivering spiritual care.5.The medical-system was rigid.6. Sharing of positive experience was very important.7.Self- reflections of the researcher and the bases for re-interpretation.8.The support resource of hospice nurses. I propose that the present study and the results provide very important reference to hospice- nursing education and spiritual care.
