This thesis focuses on the formation of the settlement of mining industry in Jin-gua-shi. The influence of the industry on local life is an important dimension in this research. The formation of Gin-gua-shi settlement attributed to the development of mining industry, which attracted many people to move and settle down in this town. Through 1897 to 1987, the Japanese domination during the colonization period and the administration of Tai-jin company during KMT governance had great influence on the development of this place. The influence is reflected in every aspects of local life, including the economic system, the structure of the space of its settlement, the way of daily consumption and entertainment, and the community ceremonies and rituals. The following are themes and methods of the thesis: 1. To do field research and to describe the natural environment and culture of the settlement so as to represent the characteristics of this mining town will be a main section. The geographical features have great influence on the formation of the settlement. In cultural aspect, I focus on the establishment of the settlement and the process of migration. I approach this issue, the historical development of the mining industry in Jin-gua-shi, from a larger historical background. In this way, we can have further understanding of the influence of the Japanese domination during colonization and the administration of Tai-jin Company during KMT governance. 2. To understand the working condition of the local people, and to explore how the economic system affected habitants after industrialization, which happened during the Japanese domination and the administration of Tai-jin company, is another concern of this paper. Beside, how miners think about their working experience and how the Japanese people established Jin-gua-shi settlement and their influences on the arrangement of the space are also important. This paper explores how the Japanese people and Tai-jin Company dominated the means of consumption and entertainment of local people, and how they affected the community rituals and activities. In the light of Foucault’s interpretation of power, this paper explores how power was maneuvered in all the aspects of daily life in Jin-gua-shi under the domination of Japan. During colonization, the lifestyle of Taiwanese working class was dominated by their economic activities. The working class had no control over their lives. In that situation, the Taiwanese people used community rituals as a means of resistance. Local ceremonies and rituals are means to raise public awareness of the importance of community and to promote public identification of the community. Moreover, through the understanding of the mining industry in Jin-gua-shi , the arrangement of the space in the settlement, the way of daily consumption, entertainment, and community ceremonies and rituals, this paper sheds light on unique characteristics of Jin-gua-shi and distinguishes differences between the settlement of Jin-gua-shi and that of Jiou-fen.
