This study explores the underground space of Taipei Metro by “lebenswelt” of phenomenology. The underground space is the experimental venue and the objective of this study is to present the real life environment of urban residents. By the two methods, ‘Appearance Intuition’ and ‘Elements Description’ of phenomenology, the various groups living under the main stream space were observed. After studying and analyzing, the life experiences of residents were reflected and another diverse life other than the single mechanism of rapid transportation was discovered. The result shows: 1. Mass Rapid Transportation (MRT) is a modern constructive space in the highly civilized environment. Influenced by capitalism, space shows a kind of sense, technology and characteristic of single field. This study shows that people construct their own production fields and paths under the consumer civilization. Space mechanism reflects the life customs of people and it is influenced by the operational pattern of mass rapid system unknowingly. For example, the cycle pattern of ‘weekly’ and ‘daily’ can create some special behaviour pattern of some people. 2. Beyond the visible and tangible mechanism space, we see the various ‘life context’ which is produced unknowingly in people’s long-term activities. However, this life context would not appear in front of participants. This study found that residents were not passive players. Sometimes, they dominate their ideological style about lives and strive for their own space. The regularity of residents’ time and space is partly limited by the rules of mass rapid system, and also dominated by personal custom. Furthermore, with the formation of regularity and accumulation of experience, residents develop different cognitions to urban experience and create different life context. In daily lives, the concept of field comes from the behaviour experience of space, e.g. the homeless, the walking elders and dance-practising youths. Fields with these purposes have become the spots for people to live and share experiences. 3. MRT offers a frame under which many dynamic living groups exist. By studying issues about urban space, the unique “existing” methods of urban residents are revealed. How residents construct their living fields with their cognitions? What brings the structures of fields in shape and what has been recorded for Taipei residents at the early age of MRT? This study does not only discover answers to above questions, but also unveils the unique “existing” conditions of urban residents.
