This research adopted unequivalent pretest-posttest experimental design to investigate the immediate and follow-up effects of implementing picture books in death education on 2nd grade pupils in relation to their attitudes toward death. Two 2nd grade classes in Linyuan District, Kaohsiung City were assigned to experimental group (21 students) and control group (21 students). The experimental group implemented death education using picture books as main material at flexible curriculum time, two sectors/week, for 8 weeks; giving none treatment to the control group during the same period of time.Data collected from “Students’Attitudes toward Death Scale for Elementary School Student” as research tool was examined by independent groups, paired-sample T-test; content of students’ worksheets and feedback, teaching records and reflects of teachers were also discussed as cross-reference.
The result showed significant differences between two groups as follows:
1. Using picture books as teaching design is appropriated for 2nd grade students.
2. Experimental group’s total score of “fear” and “avoidance” sub-scale both show the immediate effect of counseling.
3. Experimental group’s total score of Students’Attitudes toward Death Scale for Elementary School and “fear”, “sorrow”, “avoidance”, “worry” sub-scale show the follow-up effect of counseling.
4. Experimental group received death education using picture books perform more progressive and positive thinking of death attitude.
5. Teachers implementing this education project can realize students’ performances of death attitude and improve professional development by themself more likely.Based on findings, several constructive suggestions were proposed for schools and further research.
