This proposal involves a two-year book writing project that is an extension of my achievements during the past 3 years and an ongoing project of the Ministry of Science and Technology. I aim to comprehensively present my findings from recent years in the form of a book and to further extend my research development. In this book, I will apply a feminist perspective to investigate how a series of market-oriented and performance management-based university restructurings in Taiwan, which have occurred since the beginning of the millennium, influenced the work process and professional identity of university faculty of different genders, with unique family statuses, and from varied professional fields and institutions. This book will focus on the following 2 aspects: (a) understanding the changes in the meaning, evaluation method, labor process, and labor conditions of current academic work, and how these changes influence the gender dynamics encountered in academic workplace; and (b) exploring how scholars respond to the new university context, which includes changes in professional identity and methods of resistance, and how gender practice and social relations have been restructured in their everyday life. Finally, this book will reflect on the possible meaning of and effect these changes can have on universities, a place that assumes a vital responsibility of educating and fostering talent. In addition, the possibility of universities acting as a base of a democratic, critical, and gender equity public sphere will be analyzed. Applying institutional ethnography, this study mainly used interviews and text analyses for examination. Most of the empirical data has been collected; only auxiliary interviews and continual collection of policy documents remain to be completed. The publication of this book will enable a critical comprehension of the transformations and vicissitudes occurring in the current academia from a gender perspective.
