This study used positive psychology as the theoretical basis and adopted topic analysis as the method. Participants were three adolecents who had been awarded the President Educational Award as they were in junior or high school. The purposes of the study were to exploring their outstanding positive experiences of growing in disadvantaged families under different unfavorable environments which effected their life, study, interpersonal and career. These unique and outstanding positive experiences these adolecents had understood and handled will been served as reflections for popularization. From their existing situations and experiences, the results of the study are as follows. Three adolecents who grew up in disadvantaged families all faced economic difficulties, but they had different psychological changes which were from not knowing poverty, knowing poverty to reducing financial burden by their own efforts. In addition, they all faced their parents absent and family functioning not well, but relatives' love completed their families. Growing up in difficult environments, they created self-confidence by their own efforts and knew to give back to families and society after receiving other's help. Finally, the motivations that enabled adolescents from disadvantaged families to move forward were: “The reality that there was no retreat made them to understand that they can only work hard on their own”, “Help and guidance from important others”, “Family love provided by family members”, “Positive thinking to face adversity”, “Having personal goals and beliefs”, and “Having positive example to be their benchmark for lifelong learning”. |
