Globalized substance abuse has become a serious humanity problem in the contemporary society. All countries in the world are committed to prevent and block its damage. Statistics and research shown the drug related crimes and abuse are raging increasingly and leaning to younger generation. In Taiwan for the last decade, substance abuse and dependence have also become more serious as it affects families as well as the society. In drug usage, quitting and treatment, the family can play a negative role, but it also has a positive impact element. In a typical Chinese family, the parents are more likely to take the responsibility of looking after the drug addicts and will actually take up the main caring roles. When drug addicts emerge in the family, apart from bearing a huge financial burden, the family will also has to face family reconstruction issues such as the curious vision from relatives and friends, the upbringing of children, and marriage crises. However, for the drug addicts to determine to quit and their chance of success is related to their family members. As far as the parents of drug users are concerned, they are the victims and also the alliances that can help the drug users directly. The main purpose of this research is to explore the experience of drug addicts' parents facing their children's drug usage and the mentality of accompanying their children in detoxification. Through the narration and interpretation of the parents' life stories, we can further explore the meaning behind the phenomenon and acquire understanding. Let the world of parents' life reappear and be noticed, let parents come out of hiding, face their children's addiction, and help their children coming out of the addictive world. This research is a qualitative research, collecting data through field surveys, participating observations and in-depth interviews. Synthesize the stories from seven research participants and categorize the topics from the two journeys. The topics about the drug addict's parents facing the child's drug usage experiences are analyzed and summarized as follows:(1) seek exemption from responsibility: the appearance of ignorance and incompetence after losing controlling power; (2) the inability to face family disasters: the frustration of the family being dismantled and destroyed; and (3) the feeling of being alive is worse than death: no hope of survival can be found and fear of existence. Parents are trapped in a sea of misery because of their children's drug abuse, but also due to their children's needs, parents have embarked on a long journey to accompany their children in detoxification. From their stories, the topics of the mental journey from the parents of drug addicts accompanying their children are: (1) full of conflicting mood: wrestling for not able to believe that victory and expectation will be successful; (2) life-changing tuition: change oneself, discover oneself and learn self-affirmation; and (3) rebirth from the resurrection of the dead: find a meaningful entity, regain the capacity of existence and the power of love. It is hoped that through this research, we will step into the stories of those parents and further explore the companionship mentality of the parents with drug addicts; in order to assist these parents to become helpers, enable them to face drug addicts, and accompany their children to successfully quit drugs, so both parties' lives can be renascent. |
