Libraries are the most important locations that provide books in schools. Effective activities to promote reading can turn libraries from passive into active institutions , in turn achieving the goal of making students read a lot broadly. This study uses students in higher grades in an elementary school in Jiayi County as research subjects, and conjoint analysis is used to explore important factors that influence the efficacy of activities to promote reading in elementary schools. Results of questionnaire survey are used to summarize the following main conclusions: 1) Male and female students both most frequently check out comics over other types of books. 2) Male and female students have different means by which they find out information about activities. 3) Male and female students perceive activities to promote reading with significant difference. 4) Students believe that the most important factor in activities to promote reading is how activities are conducted, while rewards can also enhance student preference for activities to promote reading. 5) The optimal combination simulated through conjoint analysis is: using a question-and-answer with prizes as the activity, and gift certificates from the co-op store as the reward, with the whole class participating. Based on the results of analysis, the following points are suggested: 1) Students’ favorite type of books is comics, and is the type most often borrowed. Libraries should hold educational comics to enhance student interest in learning. 2) When notifying students of activities to promote reading, activity names should vary and methods should be diverse, accommodating differences between male and female students to maximize effects. 3) In follow-up research, public libraries can be used as subjects, in which the same methods are used to find the most appropriate combination of promotional activities, to enhance the usage efficacy of libraries.
