In the early 21st Century on the edge of Taipei Metropolis, three districts, Neihu, Nangang and Sihji, have experienced a phase featured with fragmented and dynamic landscape. Because of the urban sprawl, this area has become part of the urban-rural fringe. On the fringe, the landscape is distinct from while similar to its neighbors, both the city and the countryside. The strong sense of obscurity and dynamics casts a challenge on identifying the entity of this area; however, it also provides an interesting chance to look into the phenomena of urban sprawl. For understanding the emergence of this landscape, three steps are taken in this paper. Firstly, it reviews literatures in relation to urban-rural fringe. Secondly, it profiles the transformation of this landscape. Finally, it concludes that this urban-rural fringe is characterized the traditional town fabric which mixed up with a newly-emerged Edge Cityscape. All together, two types of landscape can be found in this area. Along the flood plain of Keelung River, there is old townscape consisting of illegal factories, high-rises, apartments, high streets and markets. Scattered around the freeway interchanges, there is new edge cityscape comprises high-tech plant & offices, warehouse stores and gated communities on the hillside. |
