Grotesque Style is an unique and fascinating product in the medieval Europe. Although they may seem to be amused, ridiculous or even terrifying, they appeared plentifully on the illuminated manuscripts, Gothic miniatures, monasteries, even in the house of God---the cathedral. They never take a great scene, but always stand silently in the margins. This thesis attempts to find out the reasons and explanations for the grotesque style, and has Barcelona Cathedral(Spain) being its work of field. The text is divided into five chapters: chapter one is the preface; chapter two describes the concept of sacred space and the origins, the themes of grotesque style; chapter three gives some possible explanations to the appearance of grotesque style; chapter four concentrates on the grotesque style applied in Barcelona Cathedral; and chapter five has the conclusion.
