Wildlife tourism is a natural resource-based activity where tourists can appreciate attractive wildlife outdoors, observe their foraging behavior or take photographs, touch and feed them. Therefore, it is a sustainable activity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the ecotourism of sika deer in Green Island. This study intends to propose suggestions for the future development of ecotourism of sika deer in Green Island according to the research results. This study used qualitative research methods, such as literature review, participant observation, and in-depth interviews, to investigate the experience, impact, and management of promotion of ecotourism of sika deer. This study found that, the tourism of sika deer in Green Island is divided into two types. One type is to experience outsourced sika deer ecological park, and the other type is to go sightseeing tour at night in the wild. Ecological park was operated for 3 years (2007-2010), and the operator terminated operation due to financial loss. At present, the ecological park is closed. The causes of failure of the ecological park were poor planning and lack of support from local communities. Moreover, in terms of the experiencing of park, tourists were unable to directly interact with sika deer in a close distance. In addition, insufficient number of sika deer could not attract tourists to pay a visit to the ecological park. Sightseeing activities at night are mainly promoted by operators of B&Bs. However, the investigation also discovered that, many factors affect the quality of sightseeing at night. Under the situation where the tourists are not guaranteed to watch sika deer, tourists tend to file complaints. Furthermore, this study proposed the potential impacts faced by sika deer tourism in Green Island. The results can be provided as reference for other areas in Taiwan to promote sika deer tourism.
