賴和一系列針砭世局的小說中，企圖心最大莫過於〈蛇先生〉一作，其中貫穿的人文關懷，將人心的軟弱及偏執面，刻劃的入木三分。人心之畏「惡病」，猶如畏懼「惡法」，「法律」與「醫學」如何真正的直指人心，其關鍵點在於能不能擺脫「人惑」的迷思，無怪乎法律修訂益繁，秘方也愈見神奇。共同癥結，都反映出凡人不能面對現實，他們都在追尋什麼？同時也在逃避什麼？身兼醫師及小說家「雙重身分」的賴和，勢必不能滿足於這個處境，他必須更冷靜、更理性地去究元決疑，才能有效勘定人心的活水源頭。 She Xian Sheng, one of the Lia's sttire novel shows his attempt.
