This study aims to explore adolescent self-identity and cultural group identity in Pixar's animated film “Luca”. The film narrates the adventures of a sea monster named Luca and his friend Alberto in a small Italian seaside town. Through analyzing characters, plot, and symbolic elements, this research seeks to understand the representations of adolescent self-identity and cultural group identity within this film. Initially, this study explores how the protagonist, Luca, expresses his self and cultural identity in “Luca”. Regarding self-identity, the research finds that Luca's growth process aligns with Erikson's psychosocial development theory. Through Luca's exploration of his dual identity as a sea monster and human, he manifests his struggle and integration within his self-identity. Moreover, Luca is not bound by the misunderstandings between his sea monster family and the human townsfolk. Instead, he strives to establish his unique self-identity. Secondly, regarding cultural group identity, the film depicts the cultural background and geographical environment of specific groups, emphasizing cultural identity and a sense of belonging. By presenting the daily lifestyle, specific traditions, values, and festival activities of different groups, the film showcases their cultural identities and traditional values. Simultaneously, the film reveals the diversity and variability of cultural group identity by demonstrating cultural conflicts and fusion among different groups. Lastly, the findings of this study hold significant implications for understanding self identity exploration in animated films. It provides deep insights into the process of how adolescents seek and accept themselves in the face of internal conflicts and external pressures. This has practical and theoretical significance in the fields of adolescent development, education, and mental health.
